Renting a lehenga makes sense when you will wear it once: a sangeet, an engagement, a bridesmaid's outfit, a friend's wedding. You get a far more elaborate garment than the same money would buy, and you do not have to store it afterwards. The catch is that a rental is fitted and adjusted by the shop within limits, not made for you, so the checking you do on the day matters more than with custom stitching.

Public rental listings in Delhi are wide. Simple party lehengas are commonly offered from a couple of thousand rupees, bridal lehengas typically run from ten thousand to several times that, and designer pieces can go far higher. Three things set the price: the designer and the work on the garment, how much of the outfit is included, and the rental period.
Rental period, deposit and what is included
- Rental period. Ask how many days the price covers, and when you collect and return. A price for one day is not the same as a price for a wedding weekend.
- Security deposit. Most shops take a refundable deposit. Ask the amount, what it is held against, and how many days the refund takes.
- What is in the price. The skirt, the choli and the dupatta should be included. Jewellery, dupatta pins, canvas or an inner skirt sometimes are not, and cleaning may or may not be.
- Late fee and damage policy. Get both in writing: what a late return costs per day, and what counts as damage.
The checklist for the trial
Do not choose from photographs alone, and do not pay in full before you have tried the outfit on. At the shop:
- Try the complete set. Wear the choli, the lehenga and the dupatta together, in the heels and the bra you will wear on the day.
- Check the fit at the waist, hips and blouse. The waist is usually adjustable with a drawstring and hooks. The blouse is harder, so pay particular attention to the bust, the armholes and the length.
- Ask exactly what the shop will alter. Hemming the length, taking the waist in or out and adjusting hooks are common. Re-cutting a blouse or changing a fitted panel usually is not.
- Sit, walk and lift your arms. A heavy lehenga behaves differently once you move, and you want to find that out in the shop.
- Inspect the condition. Look at the hem, the inside seams, the underarms of the blouse, the zari and any beadwork for stains, loose stitches and missing pieces, and point them out before you sign.
- Photograph it. Take dated photographs of the outfit and any existing marks, and ask the shop to note them on your receipt.
Questions to ask before you pay
- What is the total: rental, deposit, alterations, cleaning and any late fee?
- What is included: dupatta, inner skirt, jewellery, blouse padding?
- What alterations are free, and how long do they take?
- When can I collect it, and what is the latest I can return it?
- How is it cleaned between customers, and does the price include cleaning?
- What happens if it is damaged or stained during the event?
- Can I cancel or change the date, and do I get the advance back?

Rent, buy or get one made?
Renting wins for a one-off event and a tight timeline. If you want a garment that is cut to your body, in your own fabric, and yours to keep, compare the options in readymade, semi-stitched or custom lehenga, and work out how much time a made lehenga needs with our wedding outfit timeline.

How much does it cost to rent a lehenga in Delhi?
Our indicative range is in the table above. In public rental listings, simple party lehengas are commonly offered from a couple of thousand rupees and bridal lehengas typically from around ten thousand, with designer pieces going much higher. Most shops add a refundable security deposit.
Can a rental lehenga be altered?
Usually in limited ways: hemming the length, taking the waist in or out and adjusting hooks and the drawstring. Re-cutting the blouse or changing a fitted panel is normally not possible, so try the outfit on and confirm what the shop will adjust before you pay.
How early should I book a lehenga on rent?
Earlier than feels necessary in wedding season. Popular pieces are booked well ahead, and booking early leaves time for alterations. Try it on and confirm the alterations as soon as you have chosen.
What happens if the lehenga gets damaged or stained?
That depends on the shop's policy, which is why you should ask before you pay. Get the damage policy in writing, photograph the outfit's existing condition at collection, and ask what is deducted from the deposit.
Can I rent a sherwani or a suit in Delhi as well?
Yes. Rental shops commonly carry sherwanis, suits and tuxedos alongside lehengas and gowns. The same checks apply: try the complete outfit, confirm the alteration limits, and ask about the deposit and the return date.
