When someone says they are buying a lehenga, they might mean one of three quite different things. A readymade lehenga is finished and in a size. A semi-stitched one is part-made and needs finishing. A custom-stitched one is made to your measurements from scratch. The choice decides how well it fits, how long it takes, what it costs and how much of the work still falls to you, so it is worth settling before you fall for a design.
The three options compared
| What to compare | Readymade | Semi-stitched | Custom-stitched |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you get | A finished lehenga in a standard size | A stitched skirt, often with a drawstring, and a choli supplied as fabric or with margins | A lehenga cut and stitched to your measurements |
| Fit | Standard size, then alterations | Skirt sized at home or by a tailor, choli tailored to you | The best of the three, if the tailor is good |
| Time | Immediate, plus any alterations | Days to a couple of weeks for a tailor to finish it | Weeks, with trials |
| Customisation | None | The choli and some details | Full control of design, fabric and fit |
| Watch for | Heavy embroidery limits alterations. Ask for inner margin | You still need a good tailor, and you pay for the finishing | Quality varies by tailor. Insist on trials |
Which one suits which situation
- You are the bride. Go custom or designer made-to-order. The outfit is worn for hours in front of everyone, and fit is the thing you cannot fix on the day.
- A sangeet, engagement or wedding guest. Readymade or semi-stitched is usually enough, and far less stressful.
- Your proportions sit outside the size chart. Size charts are built on standard proportions. If your waist, hip and length do not follow them, semi-stitched or custom gives you a far better result than altering a readymade piece.
- You have under two weeks. Readymade with alterations, or rent one. A custom lehenga needs time for trials.
- You have a tight budget. Readymade or rental. Remember that semi-stitched adds tailoring cost on top of the garment.
- You want to wear it again. Semi-stitched is the easiest to re-size later, because the skirt is built to be adjusted and the choli can be re-stitched.
What finishing a semi-stitched lehenga costs
The sticker price of a semi-stitched lehenga leaves out the tailoring. Budget for the blouse and for sizing the skirt, plus any alterations. Here are our indicative ranges for the relevant stitching in Delhi.
| Service | Indicative range | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Blouse Stitching | ₹500 – ₹2,500 | See shops |
| Lehenga Stitching | ₹3,500 – ₹12,000 | See shops |
| Alterations | ₹150 – ₹600 | See shops |
A semi-stitched choli often arrives as fabric with margins, so the blouse is cut and stitched to your measurements. Give your tailor the full set from our guide to blouse measurements, and the skirt numbers from how to measure for a lehenga.
Buying a lehenga online: what to check
- The size chart, in centimetres. Compare the waist, hip and length on the chart to your own measurements, not to a size label.
- The inner margin. Ask how much spare fabric is in the side seams of the choli and the skirt. It decides how much a local tailor can let out.
- What is stitched and what is not. Is the choli stitched, semi-stitched or fabric only? Is the skirt lined? Does the price include the dupatta and an inner skirt?
- The return and exchange policy, and whether it covers sizing. Many sellers do not accept returns on customised or altered pieces. Read this before you pay.
- Customer photos, not just the listing photos. Reviews with real photographs show how the colour, fabric and fit compare with the product images.
- The fabric details. Silk, net, georgette and velvet behave very differently. Ask for the fabric of the skirt, the choli and the lining, separately.
- The delivery date against your event. Leave a buffer of at least two weeks after delivery for alterations and a trial, and more in the winter wedding months.
- A local tailor lined up. Even a well-fitting online lehenga often needs the hem and the choli adjusted. Find the tailor before the parcel arrives, not after.
Finding the tailor who will finish it

What does a semi-stitched lehenga mean?
It is a part-finished lehenga. The skirt is usually stitched with a drawstring so it can be sized, and the choli is supplied as fabric or with margins, so a tailor cuts and stitches it to your measurements. You pay for the finishing separately.
Is a custom lehenga better than a readymade one?
For fit, usually yes, because it is cut to your measurements. It is not always the better choice: a readymade lehenga from a good maker can be excellent and is available at once. The right answer depends on your time, your budget and whether your proportions follow the size chart.
Can a readymade lehenga be altered?
Usually in small ways: the hem, the waist and the choli fit. Heavy embroidery and panelled flares limit how much can change, and you need spare fabric in the seams. Ask about the inner margin before you buy.
How long does a custom lehenga take?
Plan for several weeks for a plain one and longer for heavy embroidery or a designer label, with at least two trials. Our wedding outfit timeline shows how to work back from the event date.
Do I need a tailor for a semi-stitched lehenga?
Yes, for the choli, which is cut and stitched to your measurements, and usually for sizing the skirt. Find a tailor before you order, and ask how long they need.
