Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, and Karwa Chauth comes ten days earlier, on Thursday 29 October. Tailors in Delhi fill up well before both, so the useful question is not what to wear but by what date you must order it. This guide works backwards from the festival dates to give an order-by date for each kind of garment, and says what to do if you are already late.

The dates that matter in 2026

Order-by dates for Diwali 2026

We have worked back from two pickup dates, each three days before the festival so there is time to fix a fit. That means collecting by Monday 26 October for Karwa Chauth, and by Thursday 5 November for Diwali.

If you are past the date

Passing an order-by date does not mean going without. It means switching to a route that fits the time you have left.

  • Readymade, then alter. Buy a piece close to your size and have it altered. Simple alterations are usually quicker than stitching from scratch, but festival weeks are busy, so book the alteration on the day you buy.
  • Semi-stitched. Fabric cut to a pattern that a tailor finishes to your measurements. It is usually faster than a fully custom garment. See readymade, semi-stitched or custom lehenga.
  • Rent it. For a lehenga, sherwani or gown, renting avoids the stitching schedule completely. Book early, because festival and wedding dates fill rental shops too.
  • A simpler design. Fewer panels, no lining and no handwork are faster to make. Ask the tailor what can honestly be finished by your date.

How to ask for express work

  1. Say the date and the occasion when you walk in, before the price is agreed.
  2. Ask whether they can commit to that date, and whether there is a rush charge.
  3. Get the delivery date, the price and the advance written on the receipt.
  4. Bring the fabric and your measurements, and settle the design in one visit.
  5. Book the trial slot when you order, so it does not slide.
  6. Keep a backup you could still use: a readymade piece or a rental.

Buy fabric and get measured first

Fabric is the first step and the one you control. Markets and fabric shops get crowded in the weeks before Diwali, so aim to buy by the middle of October, and ask the shop whether cotton should be washed before it is cut. Our guide to Delhi's fabric markets shows which market suits which fabric.

Have your measurements ready before you visit a tailor. Our guide to taking body measurements at home walks through each one, and the free measurement scan gives a quick estimate to compare with your tape. Your tailor will confirm every number before cutting.

Watch for festival closures

Around Dhanteras and Diwali, many workshops run at reduced capacity or close for a few days, and some staff may travel home for the festival. Ask whether the shop will be shut between 6 and 11 November, and count those days out of your schedule.

Where to start

If you do not already have a tailor, start with the best-reviewed ones near you and ask each for a written date before you agree anything.

Frequently asked questions

What is the last date to order a suit or sherwani for Diwali 2026?

As a planning rule, a stitched suit, bandhgala or sherwani needs up to four weeks in festival season, so for pickup by 5 November the order should go in around 8 October. After that a tailor may still agree to a simple design, but get a written date and keep a readymade or rental backup.

When is Diwali in 2026?

Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) falls on Sunday 8 November 2026. Dhanteras is on Friday 6 November and Karwa Chauth is on Thursday 29 October. Check a Panchang for the exact puja timing in your city.

Will tailors in Delhi charge extra for express stitching?

Some do. There is no standard rate, so ask when you place the order and have any rush charge written on the receipt along with the delivery date. Our tailoring charges guide shows typical prices for normal timelines.

Can I get a blouse stitched in a week before Diwali?

Often yes, for a plain blouse and a tailor who has space, but in festival weeks allow up to twelve days and confirm the date in writing. Padded, lined or designer blouses take longer, so ask the shop before you buy the fabric.

What if I miss the date for a custom lehenga?

Switch routes. A semi-stitched lehenga finished to your measurements, a readymade piece fitted to you, or a rental will all fit a shorter schedule than a fully custom one. Our lehenga guides compare the options and the checks to make with each.
