A sherwani is usually the most expensive garment a man will order, and the price spread is enormous. In the public listings we reviewed, basic readymade sherwanis start at a few thousand rupees, custom stitching is listed from around ₹12,000 at some tailors, and designer made-to-order pieces run from around ₹20,000 to well over a lakh. Those are not competing prices for one product. They are three different products sharing one name, and knowing which one you are buying is most of the work.

What custom stitching costs in Delhi

These are our indicative ranges for the stitching of a sherwani and of the garments usually ordered with it. They cover labour, not fabric.

For a sherwani, the stitching is rarely the largest cost. Fabric and handwork usually decide whether a sherwani is affordable. Brocade, raw silk, jacquard and velvet cost very differently per metre, and embroidery, which is often priced and done separately from the stitching, can cost more than the garment itself. Ask every tailor for a quote that separates the stitching, the fabric, the lining and buttons, and the handwork, so you can see which line moves.

Sherwani, achkan or bandhgala?

  • Sherwani. A long coat, usually knee-length or longer, often embroidered or in a rich fabric, closed at the front with buttons.
  • Achkan. A similar long coat, typically plainer and more closely cut than a sherwani.
  • Bandhgala (Jodhpuri). A shorter, jacket-length piece with a closed, mandarin-style collar, worn as a formal alternative.

Names overlap between shops, so ask to see a photo of what they mean and agree the length and the collar in writing.

Fabric and finishing: where the price moves

  • The base fabric. Pure silk and heavy brocade cost more than blends. Velvet is popular for winter weddings and is harder to sew.
  • Lining and interlining. A good lining changes how the coat hangs and how it feels to wear for a long evening.
  • Embroidery. Machine embroidery and hand embroidery are priced very differently. Ask which one a quote assumes.
  • Buttons and trims. Plain metal, covered or kundan buttons, and any piping or borders, all add to the total.
  • How much fabric it takes. A sherwani uses far more cloth than a shirt. Ask the tailor how many metres to buy before you visit a fabric market.

What to measure

A sherwani needs the shirt set plus its own length, and it is cut like a jacket, so the shoulders matter most. Tailors ask for chest, waist, hip, shoulder, sleeve length, bicep, neck and the length of the coat, and for the pyjama or churidar: waist, hip, length, thigh, knee and bottom. Our guide to measuring for a suit, shirt and trousers explains each one. For a garment this structured, let the tailor measure you in person as well.

How long it takes, and when to order

As a planning rule, start a custom sherwani at least six to eight weeks before the wedding, and earlier for heavy embroidery, a designer label, or anything in the busy winter months. Ask for the delivery date in writing and for at least two trial fittings: one when the coat is roughly assembled and one to check the corrections. Fixing the shoulders at the first fitting is cheap. Fixing them after the embroidery is finished is not. Our wedding outfit timeline sets out the whole schedule.

Is renting a sherwani cheaper?

For a single event, usually. Here is our indicative range for a sherwani on rent.

Indicative rental shops price ranges in Delhi
ServiceIndicative rangeDetail
Sherwani on Rent₹3,000 – ₹12,000See shops
Indicative rental range from Groovyn's own research, not a quote. Rentals usually add a refundable deposit, so ask what it is and when it is returned.

Renting works well if you will wear it once and the fit does not need to be exact. Making one works out better if you will wear it more than once, want the fit right, or are choosing your own fabric. Whichever you choose, check the condition and the alteration limits in person. For what to check on a rental, the same questions apply as for a lehenga: see lehenga on rent in Delhi.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to stitch a sherwani in Delhi?

The table above gives an indicative range for the stitching. Fabric, lining, buttons and embroidery are usually extra, and they often cost more than the stitching itself. In the public listings we reviewed, custom stitching started from around ₹12,000 at some tailors and designer made-to-order pieces ran from around ₹20,000 to well over a lakh.

What is the difference between a sherwani and an achkan?

Both are long coats. A sherwani is often embroidered and made in a rich fabric, and an achkan is typically plainer and more closely cut. Names overlap between shops, so ask for a photo of what they mean.

How early should I order a custom sherwani?

As a planning rule, at least six to eight weeks before the wedding, and earlier for heavy embroidery, designer work or the winter wedding season. Get the delivery date in writing and ask for at least two trial fittings.

Can a readymade sherwani be altered?

Usually in small ways: sleeve length, coat length and the waist. Shoulders are hard to change and heavy embroidery limits everything. Ask whether there is spare fabric in the seams before you buy.

Is it cheaper to rent a sherwani than to make one?

For one wearing, usually. Add the refundable deposit, the limited alterations and the condition of the garment to the comparison. If you want an exact fit, your own fabric, or several wearings, making one can be the better value.
